The complexes MCl//4-xL (x equals 2, M EQUVLNT U, L EQUVLNT P(CH//3)//2(C//6H//5)O (dmppo); x equals 2. 5, M EQUVLNT U, L EQUVLNT PCH//3(C//6H//5)//2O (mdppo); x equals 3, M EQUVLNT Th and U, L EQUVLNT mdppo; x equals 3. 5, M EQUVLNT Th and U, L EQUVLNT dmppo and mdppo) have been prepared. The IR and UV-visible (M EQUVLNT U only) spectra of the complexes are reported, and some possible coordination arrangements for the tetrachloride complexes are discussed in terms of a cone angle factor approach to steric crowding about the metal atoms in these compounds.
