ing agent with the assistance of ultrasonic waves. Compar-
ing our experiments with this method, we suggest that an
analogy could be drawn between two cases. In our ex-
periments, the nanowire network or forests also could be
looked upon as the template, which acting as reducing agents
with the assistance of HF. The difference between both
methods is that the template of nanowire network or for-
est in our method is in situ prepared. We also presume
that the formation of silver and gold dendrites may be cre-
ated via diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) model [24];
which involves the cluster formation by the adhesion of
a particle with random path to a selected seed on contact
and allows the particle to diffuse and stick to the growing
structure.
It is the fact that above discussion is only our supposi-
tion. Therefore, to give more experimental evidences, sys-
tematic studies are required, including SPM characterization
as a function of the deposition/etching time and intrinsic
factors at the atomic level, such as silicon/metal interfacial
bonding.

selection of electroless metal deposits on silicon in aqueous
HF solution. Complex surface microstructures generally
play an important role in the morphological selection of
electroless metal deposits. We suggest that the complex
silicon microstructures may play the roles of template and
reducing agent with the assistance of HF. In addition, it is
quite possible that some other mechanism may contribute
or even lead to the formation of dendrites. Therefore, more
extended work including experiments and theoretical cal-
culations is needed to clarify the origins of morphological
selection of electroless metal deposits on silicon in HF
solution.
