Alkanes

Alkanes are a class of saturated hydrocarbons characterized by single bonds between carbon atoms, forming linear, branched, or cyclic structures. The general formula for alkanes is CnH2n+2, where n represents the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. These compounds are inert and relatively non-reactive under normal conditions, owing to the absence of functional groups that can participate in chemical reactions. Alkanes are abundant in petroleum and natural gas deposits, where they serve as major constituents of fossil fuels. They are also produced synthetically and used as solvents, lubricants, and raw materials in chemical synthesis. The physical properties of alkanes, such as boiling point and melting point, increase with the molecular weight and branching of the carbon chain.
